How does IntelliCharge work during winter?

The main purpose of IntelliCharge during winter remains the same as in the summer - to optimise your overall economy. That means that the system will keep on charging the battery when it’s the cheapest, use the battery during the most expensive hours, and depending on your settings, potentially also sell when you can earn money on this.

What does the typical winter day with IntelliCharge look like?

During winter, there’s a lot fewer sunny hours and therefore a lot higher energy needs. The solar production is typically not nearly sufficient enough to cover your needs, so you can expect IntelliCharge to charge your battery when it’s the cheapest, typically at night. Depending on your battery capacity, energy needs and prices, you may also see a top-up charge prior to the most expensive hours of the day which typically take place in the evening.

To ensure the cheapest energy is used during the most expensive hours of the day, IntelliCharge may prevent the battery use between the time of charge and the expensive hours.

Essentially:

  • The battery is charged during the cheapest hours.
  • Battery usage is limited during hours with medium electricity prices (electricity is purchased from the grid instead when the solar power is not sufficient.)
  • The battery is then used during the most expensive hours to achieve maximum savings.

Occasionally, even in winter the selling price may surpass the purchase price and give us an opening to generate additional earnings by selling energy. Unless the system is set up otherwise, it will always aim to optimise your overall economy, which means that it can sell energy when the price is high, even if you need to buy some energy to cover your needs later for a cheaper price.
