Why doesn’t my battery charge fully?

Here are the top 3 most common reasons:
  • Peak hours can be covered with less
  • Battery is charging slower than expected
  • Wrong battery model is registered

Peak hours can be covered with less

The system is always aiming to optimise for the best economy, within the scope of your settings.

It computes your expected energy needs throughout the day and plans to charge enough energy during the cheapest hours to cover the needs over the expensive hours (or to sell for profit when there’s an opportunity for it).

That means that your battery may not always charge up to 100%.

If the system believes 80% is sufficient to cover the peak hours, it will charge up to that level. The system only knows the prices for the next day in the late afternoon. The prices may be better the next day and charging the battery fully if not used would then result in lost profit.

Please note: during the transition period from summer to winter (and vice versa), the system may underestimate your energy needs while it’s getting used to your increased consumption. The system always uses the latest 30 days data when computing the estimations and charging plans, so it gradually adjusts on its own. If you however experience that the system is charging suboptimally/taking too long to adjust, contact our support team for help.

Battery is charging slower than expected

It can be that our system plans to charge up to 100% but it does not manage to do so. It is normal that the battery charges slower when it’s at its minimum SOC (empty battery) or nearing its maximum SOC (full charge). It's normal battery behaviour.

The age of your installation also plays a role. Older batteries typically charge slower.

Our system monitors how the battery responds to our commands and if it evaluates that the charge is insufficient, it will plan additional charges at the earliest convenience (while the purchase price is still at the lower end).

Your battery may also charge slower when it gets exposed with the cold temperatures. The colder it gets, the slower it responds. The battery should optimally stay within a room temperature environment. If that is not the case, contact your installer to get technical support with proper battery isolation and protection against the cold.

Wrong battery model is registered

Our system plans the charging within the scope of the technical specifications of the installation. It is therefore vital that your IntelliCharge account is set up with the right inverter and battery model (and capacity) registered. Each model has a different charging speed.

Some can charge with the speed of half its capacity. For example, you may have a 10 kWh battery that has a 5kW charging speed. That means that while the battery can store 10 kWh energy, it would take 2 hours to charge the battery fully. If you register a model that can charge at the same speed as its capacity, our system would expect it to charge the battery fully in one hour and not plan for a 2 hour charge.

If you’re in doubt about whether or not you registered the correct information in your IntelliCharge account, you can contact our support team for assistance.
